The Dangers of Country Living

We are not at all popular with this fine feathered friend (!). Apparently there is a junior version learning to fly by the arena and so everytime we train, mom is trash tweeting and threatening to impale us on her sharp little beak. It is a little unnerving to have her flying so low but so far it has been idle threats. Anyone know what she is (besides really mad)???

Beware of low flying birds and angry moms -- a bad combo.

  1. Looks like a woodpecker, and I think they are called Downy woodpeckers? But the boys, I think, are the one's w/the red spots on the back of the head. Not sure if I spelled it right, but it sure looks like some type of woodpecker to me!

  2. I agree with Lisa--I think it's a Downy woodpecker. And in woodpecker circles, their bill is considered fairly short. Do you have a spark arrester on your chimney? We used to have a neighborhood pileated woodpecker (think: Woody the Woodpecker sized) that liked to start each morning by pecking a tattoo on the can!
