My Wish Came True!!!!!!

I had to race home to see if it was true -- and it is! I have a family of bears!!!! Galen scared them into a tree when he went outside -- they are just outside our fenced yard -- three cubs and their mom!!!!! I am working on names, of course! And of course I had to get the camera and take pictures of my new friends :)

This first picture shows you the tree where they are hanging out -- this is our yard where I usually take my pictures...

And now my friends :)

I am in love!

  1. Holy crap you are scaring me! Yes, they are totally beautiful and all of that. But PLEASE be careful!! Momma bears are not your friend!! I do love the pics but am envisioning you going out there and giving them candy! ;-) We would like you to be around for awhile too!

  2. Silly Lisa -- bears like NUTS!!! Candy would be bad for them :) Sadly, my new friends have left before I could even give them all names -- sigh...

  5. They are beautiful, but please tell me these photos were taken from the saftey of your house with a good telephoto lens. A litter of three is uncommon. I hope they come to visit again, but keep your distance from momma bear!

  6. Actually I took the pictures from the edge of the fence in the first picture! The bears' location and posture told me that they were not a threat, and I had the fence between us :) Black bears are cute but typically wimpy! http://www.bear.org/website/

  7. So, you have bears now too! I would be cautious, M-A. Here in NJ our black bears are used to people but I'm not so sure your bears are quite as comfortable. Keep in mind that bears in general do not like dogs. Thankfully I've not had any problems, even when the bears have come over the fence and the dogs have treed them. It is not unusual at all for a mother to have two to three cubs. That's what we usually see around here. One year we had a mamma bear with five cubs.

Having the fence between you is not really too much of a comfort factor. I have seen bears move extremely fast and they go over fences in a heart beat.

We did have an instance here in town when a man was walking his dog off lead in wooded area. The bear (with small cubs) attacked the dog first and knocked the man to the ground. The dog did make it but he was in pretty bad shape.

Enjoy those bear ( I love mine! ) but be cautious. Especially with any food left out around the outside of your house --- including bird food. I've had the bears on my deck and that is way too close for comfort.

    :)

  8. I stand corrected that three is the typical litter for black bears. Perhaps we can convince you to stand on the deck away from the fence.

  9. This is why I was catching up on the blog, I knew there would be happy pictures of the baby bears. Just last week, I was reading on AP Mobile that MT bears know the day of the week garbage pick up is. Smart bears. Lovely pictures. As a Midwesterner, I'd have been right next to you snapping away. Definately not something you see every day - love their ginormous ears!
